02 news: REPRESENTATION

 1) Women are under-represented, which reflects a Patriarchal social/ cultural attitudes. In all three of the Observer front covers the broadsheet cover, women are portrayed as often defined in terms of their relationships with men. This is demonstrated is the sub- line ' Jackie: were very happy'. She appears to only be on the newspaper because of her ex-husbands fame.  In two of the front covers there are two lingerie adverts meaning that women only care about fashion and their appearance and being objectified by men which would now be perceived as sexist and untrue. In the observer 30 October 1966 front cover the queen is mentioned in the October article she is represented as a capacity as head of state. Barba Castle is the only female politician represented in all of the Observer front covers, 'Union postpone strike' illustrates the high level of unequal pay between women and men in 1960s.  Cultural contexts are representation are shown with Stephen Pollock with Elizabeth Vambe' married the before the article was published and was illustrating how unusual it was for two people of different race to be married this was known as 'mixed marriages'   

'Lawyers will urge divorce by consent' the thought was that if it was easy to get divorced the society would suffer and only men could get a divorce for women being unfaithful. Now there is divorce by consent this change made it easier for women to get a divorce which helped a greater move to gender equality.
