02 news: REPRESENTATION

 1) Women are under-represented, which reflects a Patriarchal social/ cultural attitudes. In all three of the Observer front covers the broadsheet cover, women are portrayed as often defined in terms of their relationships with men. This is demonstrated is the sub- line ' Jackie: were very happy'. She appears to only be on the newspaper because of her ex-husbands fame.  In two of the front covers there are two lingerie adverts meaning that women only care about fashion and their appearance and being objectified by men which would now be perceived as sexist and untrue. In the observer 30 October 1966 front cover the queen is mentioned in the October article she is represented as a capacity as head of state. Barba Castle is the only female politician represented in all of the Observer front covers, 'Union postpone strike' illustrates the high level of unequal pay between women and men in 1960s.  Cultural contexts are representation are shown with Stephen Pollock with Elizabeth Vambe' married the before the article was published and was illustrating how unusual it was for two people of different race to be married this was known as 'mixed marriages'

'Lawyers will urge divorce by consent' the thought was that if it was easy to get divorced the society would suffer and only men could get a divorce for women being unfaithful. Now there is divorce by consent this change made it easier for women to get a divorce which helped a greater move to gender equality.

music video, music language

 media language to promote audiences:

- music videos usually prioritise or privilege performance/star/artists singing or playing an instrument, need to have the skill of the star authenticated.

-close up shots will allow the audience to see the performers skill and him lip-syncing to camera

-close ups to hand in bans (playing instruments, drumming guitar)

-Arc pans used in wheatus to show all the performers interaction and bringing energy, humour and fun.

- the artists have eye contact with the audience.

Camera movement

teenage dirt bag,

=more conventional and steady, moves through editing in a steady way. First time we see artist he delivers the anguish as if he was also a teenage dirt bag.

Representations of Gender and Age

 Mojo magazine

AGE=
- Mojo celebrates older musicians, by putting a picture who is now old and mentioning a man who was popular in the 70s this goes against stereotypical representations of popular musicians.
- The stereotypes representation of older people as facing an uncertain future - 'there are a lot of graver out there'
-The stereotypical linking of excess and youth but using a photo of the members of Queen when they were young to illustrate the pull quote ' we were a sacrifice to the God of excess' the picture is of them being very young and had a lot of hair.

GENDER=
-Men tend to be linked and stereotypically represented to authority and seriousness. This is shown in the image of Nick Cave.
- the stereotypical representation of men artists as excessive in the cover line about queen.
-The stereotypical link of masculinity and warfare in the cover line about Billy Bragg.

Flaunts stereotype or counter stereotype

Explain how music videos use media language to promote artists (10 marks)
mise-en-scene
camerawork
sound
editing

mise en scene= Teenage dirt bag, classic American high school symbol of conformity and tradition of people knowing what their roles are in life. Boy wants to belong and clear hierarchy of people who are important and made to feel outsiders don't belong, he wants to be the guy that wins the girl, narrative music video (tells a story). At the end of the music video the band and the narrative story come together. Mise en scene codes who have importance and who are in control.
Colours have an impact, bright strong, deeply saturated colours. Creates positive connotations. It deliverers that there is always a princess and reward stereotypical
This promotes that they are artists=

Camera work = traditional way of dealing with a music video in that both the band and the lyrics of the story, the camera has, mid shots close up shots, high angle music videos promote and artists and the close ups authenticates an audience. So that they are confident accomplished artists.

Editing = Editing cuts between shots of the band and the story its self, both artists and story merge together at final scene.

Music magazine: media language

Look carefully at the front covers of MOJO and RNR magazines.

QUESTION: How far do MOJO and RNR use different media language to create different connotations(CONNOTATION meaning: an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its meaning.)

Answer on your blog. This is a high-value question and should take all lesson to answer. You can use the class blog search engine for more examples of how to analyse music magazines.

In your answer you should have 2 paragraphs:

  • analyse the media language in MOJO and RNR magazine. 'Media language' includes the placement of the main image, the type of photography, lighting, colours, fonts, how busy or restrained the cover is, the layout (such as alignment to the margins), how serious or playful
  • make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently in both extracts to create different connotations. Are there similarities in both covers? What sorts of audiences are they targeting? You could think about MOJO's rock aesthetic of living loud and dangerously compared to RNR's folk, rock, blues vibe.

     MOJO

  • MOJO, he is positioned to dominate the cover given prominence and power, occupies a great deal of space, clear what group he's in.
  • distinctive text, 'foo fighters' sans serif, word art. Red and white stripes, drop shadow behind the text, italics (leaning forward) connotes, funky, loud, action full of energy.
  • 'The further adventures of Dave Grohl' all of the funk loud text is supported by the word adventures in the featured article.
  • Pull quotes, 'we've been to funerals we've been to jail', illustrate that the artist have been through pain and struggles for the art/music, this media language reflects a very stereotypical Rockstar lifestyle of excess. Dark, sinister
  • Colours and words, playful,
  • Language and colours are different, colour is playful and vibrant but language is very dark and expresses pain and suffering.
       RnR
  •   RnP, he comes across, less aggressive more tranquil, as an uncle, calm, warn golden colours, retired life style, spiritual, quiet life.

  •  Contrast between magazines , although both magazines confirm to genre conventions, both magazines celebrate features the star in their front page as centre of visual interest, MOJO does so in a more dynamic aggressive confrontational way compared to RnRs gentle low key, folksy vibe. This is because MOJO targets a primarily male rock audience while RnR is aimed at folk and blue audiences which in not as amplified ad rock.
  • One of the magazines is busier than the other MOJO is cluttered and busy because of its numerous cover lines, Images, puffs as well as a very dynamic cover mount in neon colours with a vibrate cartoon image. RnR also has many cover lines but they are more minimalistic and justified RH margin. They are exclusively they are all in white creating a calm orderly, uncluttered, organised. Equally the cover mount with its modest cover play unheard is very plain and streamlined.
  • Although both music magazines feature many magazine articles which is typical of many music magazine, RnR is more orderly and restrained.
  • Mojo choice of colours is vibrate electric and dynamic particularly in the primary colours of the cover mount with its playful skeleton. By contrast, RnR uses soft dull browns, and only red as an accent colour.
